Our Eustis Estate exhibition, Artful Stories: Paintings from Historic New England, brings together paintings from across Historic New England’s collection, presenting them with a fresh perspective. But what can we learn from the original context of these paintings? In this virtual series, we explore where the paintings from the exhibition typically hang, what they meant to the original owners, and how they interact with the other collections in the house.
The 1761 Joseph Blackburn portrait of Sally Sayward Barrell is usually seen in the nearly intact eighteenth-century parlor at Sayward-Wheeler House in York Harbor, Maine. The house collections reflect the status and way of life enjoyed by the Sayward family. How do these same collections reflect the narratives of Prince, Cato, and Boneto, enslaved members of the household, and that of Prince’s wife Dinah, also enslaved? Join Senior Curator Nancy Carlisle and Site Manager Marilyn Keith Daly for a look inside Sayward-Wheeler House.
