In 2019, Lisa Simpson Lutts began researching Africans and African Americans who lived and worked in Castine, a small but important seaport in downeast Maine in the late 18th and 19th centuries. Through her research, she is uncovering the hidden and forgotten histories of the enslaved and free people of color who made an impact on not only Castine, but on larger communities like Portland, Maine.
Lisa hopes that her research will not only inform today’s residents but will also encourage other small historical societies to delve into their collections to uncover, document, and teach these important stories.
On Monday, September 19th at 5:00 pm ET, Lisa Lutts will be the featured guest at ABB’s monthly Research Forum, a collaborative learning platform open to all members of ABB. At these informal sessions, scholars and citizen historians share information about their research methods, identify useful sources, describe obstacles encountered, and outline best practices.
