Introducing Revolutionary Spaces’ newest offering: Slavery & Resistance in Colonial Massachusetts. This 60-minute guided tour takes you through the Old South Meeting House and Old State House to explore the complex dynamics of slavery in New England during the 17th and 18th centuries.
During the tour, you’ll learn how slavery was first established in colonial Massachusetts and how it differed from plantation-style slavery in the South. Discover the realities of enslavement for Black individuals and the ways they used colonial institutions—like the church and courts—to carve out more autonomy for themselves, their families, and their communities. You’ll also hear the captivating stories of Scipio Gunney, Phillis Wheatley, Zipporah Potter Atkins, and Belinda Sutton, whose legacies continue to inspire us today.
The Slavery & Resistance in Colonial Massachusetts Tour is complimentary for visitors who purchase joint museum admission to the Old State House and Old South Meeting House. We hope you will join us on this enlightening journey through history, and together, let’s uncover the untold stories of resilience in the face of oppression.
