Dr. Andrea Mosterman is an Associate Professor Atlantic History, Joseph Tregle Professor in Early American History, University of New Orleans, and author of Spaces of Enslavement: A History of Slavery and Resistance in Dutch New York.

This talk will explore:

  • Structure of slavery in Albany and Columbia counties, exploring the differences between urban and farming communities
  • Structure of slavery in small communities such as Kinderhook — number of slave owners, family names, number of slaves per household
  • Lived experiences of enslaved people in Columbia County, documented with photos of existing houses in Kinderhook 
  • How enslaved peoples worshipped, and how they were buried​
